The E36 and E46 gearboxes have short gearing, with the 1:1 gear being 5th in both the 5 and 6 speeds. Both transmission ratios are nearly identical, while the 6 speed adds an overdrive gear on top. The Getrag 260 trans from the E30 is a longer ratio 5 speed, which will be preferable for certain BP-powered cars.First, this does not apply to the 260 trans, only 265s. Like Tom says, there are 2 changes. First, there is a drive gear on the trans output shaft that is replaced by a spacer bushing on the M3 trans. Second, there is a hole in the trans rear case part that has a sheet metal plug, kind of like a freeze plug in a block, that has to be pried out.The bearings are not common so they're really expensive. It's easy to separate the front half of the box from the rear half though. You really need access to a press to do it all properly, and a 30mm thin walled deep socket (I made one) to undo the output shaft nut. The shift shafts can be a bit of a pain though.

The dogleg 265 (M3/M535) gearbox is stout, but the small dogleg 245 (323i) is not going to handle a lot of power.
